Police workforce statistics published today show that there were 209,362 police workers in England and Wales a fall of 2 per cent compared with a year earlier.
National Policing Lead for Workforce Development, Chief Constable Mike Cunningham, said:
“Today’s figures do not throw up any major surprises.
“Budget cuts and the changes to the policing landscape are ensuring that police forces are working very hard to do more with less, focusing their staffing priorities on workforce planning and ensuring that the right people with the right skills are doing the right jobs in the right places.
“Forces are committed to ensuring the optimum service for the public, cutting crime and keeping citizens safe, as well as making best use of their staff and other resources.
“The small increases in female officers and officers from a black or minority ethnic background also shows that we are moving in the right direction in providing a fully representative workforce.”
