The NPCC and the Chief Police Officers Staff Association have concerns about the proportionality of extending misconduct sanctions beyond 12 months and will work with Government to ensure any change in legislation is as fair and proportionate as possible
National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Professional Standards, Chief Constable Martin Jelley said:
“There is quite rightly no time limit on criminal investigations for retired police officers. We support the Government proposal to allow gross misconduct proceedings to be taken against an individual in the 12 month period after they have left the service so that they can prevented from working within law enforcement again if the misconduct is proven.
“The NPCC and the Chief Police Officers Staff Association have concerns about the proportionality of extending misconduct sanctions beyond 12 months. We will be working with other police staff associations and the Government on this amendment and the definition of “exceptional circumstances” so any change in legislation is as fair and proportionate as possible.”
