The Government has today included child sexual abuse in the Strategic Policing Requirement, which confirms the serious and cross-boundary threats where chief constables and PCCs have a responsibility for ensuring that sufficient capabilities are in place to ensure an effective response.
National Policing Lead for Child Protection, Chief Constable Simon Bailey said:
“Abusing children is an abhorrent crime, hidden in society for far too long. Police have done a huge amount despite shrinking resources: we have responded to criticism, changed how we engage with victims and how we investigate abuse. Many victims now found confidence to report abuse, knowing we will treat them sensitively, respectfully, listen to them and take allegations seriously.
“I am pleased that the Government has changed the Strategic Policing Requirement in recognition that child sexual abuse is a national threat and a challenge for us all . Chief constables have already been increasing our resources to protect children and working together across borders but this change cements that approach.”
