The service has much to gain from the expertise of those outside policing but there is also a wealth talent inside the service

The College of Policing have developed a direct entry programme will see 20 experienced leaders from the private, public and third sectors to join policing as a superintendent as well as a graduate fast track programme that is seeking 82 recruits to be promoted from constable to inspector within three years

An ACPO spokesman said:

"The police service has embraced fast track and accelerated promotion schemes for the last four decades because it is hugely important we attract the best candidates who develop into strong leaders.

"A small number of forces are now working with the College of Policing to bring in leaders from outside the service at superintendent ranks. The service has much to gain from the ideas, perspectives and expertise of those outside policing. ACPO supports the new direct entry scheme and chief constables will be watching how it works with interest.

"It must also be said that there is wealth of talent within the service; we must also look to give serving officers as many opportunities to develop as we can."
