National policing lead explains why police have used Taser against under-18 year olds.
National Policing Lead for Conflict Management Chief Constable David Shaw said:
"The use of Taser against children is understandably a very emotional subject but the police have a responsibility to protect people from harming themselves or others, whatever their age.
“Police officers are trained to use an appropriate and proportionate level of force when faced with violence or threats of violence to keep people safe. Police officers are selected to use Tasers and receive specialist training that enables them to determine when a Taser is the best way resolving a situation. Taser provides officers a use of force option that allows distance between the officer and the subject. Alternatives, such as using a baton or police dogs, can cause more injury.
“Every use of Taser is reported and scrutinised and officers are individually accountable to the law for the amount of force they use.”
