Crime Operations

Tackling the criminals at the source of wholesale cannabis cultivation remains a key priority

Police forces will enforce the law involving cannabis use by using a range of options depending on the individual circumstances of the case. As always they will follow a proportionate approach signposting users to education and support services.

National Police Chiefs' Council Lead on Drugs, Commander Simon Bray said:

"Possessing, selling or growing cannabis is illegal under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Tackling the criminals at the source of wholesale cannabis cultivation remains a key priority because of the links with violent crime, human trafficking and modern slavery.

“The police will enforce the law to deal with those found in possession of cannabis or who cultivate the plant using a range of options that are available depending on the individual circumstances of the case. As with other forms of drug misuse, the police will follow a proportionate approach signposting users to education and support services.

“Cannabis possession offences without intent to supply are considered as part of a three-stage escalation procedure set out in College of Policing authorised professional practice.  A first offence by an adult generally attracts a warning and a second the issuing of a penalty notice before escalating to arrest and prosecution.

"We strongly encourage anyone who thinks illegal activity may be taking place to call the police or report it anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
