Home Office statistics relaesed today show that more situations are now being resolved without a Taser being fired: the number of discharges of Taser are down 4 per cent and in eight out of ten occasions its mere presence is enough to resolve a violent or potentially violent situation.
National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Taser, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said:
“Statistics released today show that officers are using Tasers responsibly. Use of Taser increased by 2 per in 2015 compared with the previous year, in line with the increase in officers trained to use the device. More situations are now being resolved without a Taser being fired: the number of discharges of Taser are down 4 per cent and in eight out of ten occasions its mere presence is enough to resolve a violent or potentially violent situation.
“When officers do need to draw their Tasers, they are trained to do so in a proportionate and responsible manner. The specialist training that officers receive is among the best in world and is constantly being reviewed to ensure it is relevant to today’s policing challenges.”
