The Office of Children's Commissioner reviewed progress made by all agencies into child sexual exploitation in groups and gangs and found progress on their recommendations but said there was still more to be done
National Policing Lead for Child Protection, Chief Constable Simon Bailey said:
“Police have done a huge amount to improve our response to child sexual exploitation as well as other forms of child sexual abuse. We have responded to criticism, changed how we engage with victims and how we investigate abuse. Many victims have now found confidence to report abuse, knowing we will treat them sensitively, respectfully, listen to them and take allegations seriously. We are reassured that the Office of the Children’s Commissioner’s review of child sexual exploitation in groups and gangs recognises the progress the police have made.
“As this report makes clear, it is the responsibility of all agencies working with children to continue to improve our collective response. Breaking down barriers in information sharing is vital so that we can all work better and more closely together to protect the vulnerable.”
“There is more to do to ensure that all frontline officers understand child sexual abuse, can identify victims and take the right action to protect children. I will continue to work with chief constables and the College of Policing to do this.”
