The Public Accounts Committee has put forward "intended to address what must be seen as a significant failure by the Home Office to provide Commissioners and senior officers with the tools they need to run their forces"
National Police Chiefs’ Council Chair Sara Thornton said:
“The Public Accounts Committee report on the ‘Financial sustainability of police forces in England and Wales’ puts forward some helpful ideas about how police could be supported in meeting the further challenges of austerity. In the last five years, forces have maintained an effective service to the public with about 25 per cent reductions in real terms in the policing grant. Police leaders are now considering fundamental changes to the way we police so we can continue to protect the public with the twin pressures of reduced resources and changing crime and demand.”
