National Police Chiefs' Council lead on Less-Lethal Weapons, Commander Neil Basu has responded to the recent inquest verdict in the case of Andrew Pimlott
Commander Basu said:
I would like to offer my condolences to the family of Andrew Pimlott. My thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.
Police officers are trained to use an appropriate and proportionate level of force when faced with violence or threats of violence in order to keep the public safe. Unfortunately there are very rare circumstances where that force results in someone being injured or, in the most extreme circumstances, losing their life.
As part of their Taser training, officers are made aware of the hazards of using Taser when combustible liquids are present. They are trained to assess the risk and possible contingencies when choosing the most appropriate tactical option. Since this incident took place, the training has been reviewed because we are constantly trying to improve.
I will read the text of the coroner’s report carefully and consider next steps with the College of Policing.
