National Police Chiefs' Council Lead on Communications Data, Assistant Chief Constable Richard Berry, responds to Apple's recent announcement that they are committed to using powerful encryption on their devices.
"Everyone has a right to communicate privately and it is important that service providers take steps to keep people's personal data safe from criminals and those who want to use it for harm. At the same time, law enforcement has a responsibility to protect UK citizens from harm and sometimes that means accessing data that would otherwise be private, to gather vital intelligence that helps us trace vulnerable missing people or to discover evidence relating to serious offences directly impacting individuals.
"We are working with Government, technology companies and others with an interest in the issue in advance of a Bill being considered in Parliament to try and get the right balance between privacy and security so that we can continue to protect people and investigate and prosecute dangerous criminals."
