As part of the spending review process, we will submit a position from the NPCC about the impact of budget cuts
National Police Chiefs’ Council Chair Sara Thornton said:
“We are expecting cuts to the policing grant of between 25 – 40 per cent in the next spending review on top of reductions of about 25 per cent in real terms in the last five years. As a result, we are likely to have lost 70,000 police posts by 2020.
“The NPCC has been bringing forces together to think carefully about how we respond to the twin challenges of deep reductions in our budgets and changing crime and demand on the service. I have been clear that we have to make fundamental changes to the way we police; if we don’t we will fail the public and put unacceptable stress on our staff by expecting significantly fewer people to do the same amount of work. As part of the spending review process, we will submit a position from the NPCC about the impact of budget cuts and how we will change in response. We will share this submission with the public.”
