Today’s useful report by HMIC indicates that 72 per cent of people feel that crime and anti-social behaviour is not a problem at all or not much of a problem in their local community. The HMIC result of 76 per cent of people being satisfied in policing mirrors a similar trend found by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in March, which indicated that overall confidence in local policing is at its highest level in ten years.
National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Local Policing, Chief Constable Simon Cole said:
“This is a reflection of the positive work that has been done by forces to engage with the public on the issues that matter to them. The importance of communication and engagement stands out of this research; those who feel more informed about their local police and are confident they can get hold of police when needed feel safer.
“Targeted police patrol is one important form of engagement that also enables officers to build relationships with communities, gather intelligence and intervene early to solve problems and prevent crime. But people are living more of their lives online so we’ve also invested in engagement through digital channels so that more people have easy access to their local police. We are developing our digital contact with the public so that in the future more people will be able to contact us and report crime online. People can find out more about their local police and how to contact them through www.police.uk.”
