Operations

Make the right choice this Christmas. Don’t drink or drug drive.

Chiefs warn that anyone getting behind the wheel after a festive drink or two faces the prospect of ending up behind bars this Christmas.

A nationwide enforcement operation launches tomorrow (Wednesday 18 December) until Wednesday 1 January. Roads policing officers will be increasing their enforcement activity and running intelligence led operations across the country to target drink and drug drivers.

All police forces will be taking part in the Christmas operation. Last year, more than 72,000 breath tests were taken during the month of December, of which over 5,500 motorists tested positive, or failed/refused to provide a sample.

In addition, more than 1,800 drivers failed a roadside drug test during the 2018 operation.

National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for Roads Policing, Chief Constable Anthony Bangham said;

“Drink or drug driving can kill. If you’re caught you face being disqualified from driving, a fine and potential imprisonment.

“My advice is the same as always; do not drink or drug drive.”

Drivers risk up to six months’ imprisonment, an unlimited fine and a substantial driving ban if they are caught driving while above the legal limit. Anyone who causes a death while drink or drug driving faces up to 14 years imprisonment.
