NPCC statement following proceedings at the High Court on October 8
An NPCC spokesperson said: “We acknowledge the High Court’s decision to quash search warrants issued under the wrong legal provision by the Central Criminal Court to Thames Valley Police in February.
“Thames Valley’s investigation into misconduct in public office continues. The force is pursuing a number of live lines of inquiry, and continues to support the national response to the release of the Epstein files in various ways, including victim engagement.
“Nationally, the policing response to the release of the files also continues to progress. The NPCC is coordinating that response, working with the National Crime Agency (NCA), Crown Prosecution Service and local forces
“A small national team made up of two senior detectives, and intelligence experts specialising in organised exploitation, is reviewing a significant volume of material to determine where further investigation may be required.
“All 43 police forces in England and Wales, alongside Regional Organised Crime Units (ROCUs) are cooperating with detailed assessments of intelligence and information to enable the national team to identify potential UK-based leads relating to suspects, victims or witnesses.
“Identifying any further potential offending, suspects, victims or witnesses is a complex process and will take time, but UK policing remains committed to carrying out a meticulous assessment of the material released by the US Department of Justice.
“In addition to Thames Valley Police, the Metropolitan Police and Surrey Police have live investigations linked to the release of the files.
“There is currently no national investigation. The NPCC’s role is to assess intelligence and identify where further investigations may be required, engage with international law enforcement partners and coordinate activity across forces to ensure relevant information is connected both within the UK and across borders.”
