Chief police officers give careful consideration to the use of water cannon on the UK mainland.
National Police Lead for Conflict Management, Chief Constable David Shaw said:
“I have led a project looking at possible future use of water cannon in policing on the UK mainland.
“We have carefully considered the possible use of water cannon in British policing and there has been healthy debate and consultation. There are a range of views among chief constables which reflect that healthy debate and the seriousness with which the police service take the issue.
“The Metropolitan Police have been clear that they wish to procure water cannon to use in London should the need arise. If the Metropolitan Police are authorised by the Home Secretary to use water cannon, we will explore the appetite to procure more water cannon for use in other parts of the UK.”
