National Police Chiefs' Council Lead for File Quality, temporary Deputy Chief Constable Stephen Jupp has responded to the joint HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) and HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate (HMCPSI) inspection report, Witness for the prosecution: Identifying victim and witness vulnerability in criminal case files.
Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Stephen Jupp, said:
“While no two cases are the same, we recognise the unique needs of vulnerable people - including intimidated witnesses - and remain committed to supporting them throughout the criminal justice process.
“As the report highlights, the quality of police reports continues to improve and awareness has risen. A national self-assessment was run in February 2015 designed to identify good practice and areas for development - this has been shared with forces, who are now implementing the results. Digital technology is also helping witnesses give evidence in new and more flexible ways.
“It is important that we work closely alongside partners, such as College of Policing and CPS, to get better still. Our goal is to create an efficient, modern and responsive criminal justice system which puts the needs of victims and witnesses first.”
