Chief Officers working on a new body to succeed ACPO

ACPO President Sir Hugh Orde said:

“Chief officers are working with PCCs to develop a new body that will succeed ACPO and have oversight of coordination of operational policing at the national level.

“The coordinating body will help police cut crime and keep the public safe, bringing together 43 forces to join up the operational response to the most serious and strategic threats. Focussing on operational delivery and developing national approaches on issues such as finance, technology and human resources, it will work closely with the College of Policing, which is responsible for developing professional standards.

“A team representing all chief officer ranks has been working hard on behalf of all ACPO members to develop proposals for a modernised, improved coordinating body.

“The proposals that will be presented to members have been subject to lengthy negotiations, which have been successful in establishing the functions of the new body and receiving support from Chief Constables Council, PCCs and the Home Secretary. Issues such as status as a company limited by guarantee and governance of national units that have detracted from ACPO's core role will be resolved in the new body.

“All chief officers will have a say on these proposals, which will be debated at ACPO conference and balloted among members.”
