At Chief Constables Council this week, Police Chief's will be considering whether to reluctantly ask the Home Secretary to introduce compulsory severance as an option to manage significant further cuts to the service.
A National Police Chief's Council spokeswoman said:
"Police chiefs are thinking carefully about how we can continue to provide policing services to the public if there are further significant cuts to the policing grant in the Government Spending Review.
“At Chief Constables Council this week, we are considering whether we should reluctantly ask the Home Secretary to introduce compulsory redundancy as an option for chiefs and Police and Crime Commissioners. This would only be used as a last resort if a force was under severe financial pressure and other changes would not make sufficient savings. We know that this causes some officers worry but with further reductions in our budgets expected it is right that we consider and debate it. We will inform our officers and staff of the outcome of the discussion as quickly as possible."
