Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) has provided assurance that chief constables are fulfilling their responsibilities under the Strategic Policing Requirement (SPR)
National Policing Lead for Public Order, Chief Constable Justine Curran said:
“The Strategic Policing Requirement (SPR) was developed to ensure that locally delivered policing is also able to meet national and international threats that go across force boundaries. This requires national coordination through chief constables coming together in the public interest, working with the National Police Coordination Centre (NPoCC), National Crime Agency (NCA) and government. Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) has provided assurance that chief constables are fulfilling their responsibilities under the SPR.
“Policing in England and Wales has consistently demonstrated our capacity and capability to respond to public order threats. We’ve continued to improve and develop the national public order framework and standards as well as our understanding of the threats we face. NPoCC has now been in place for nearly a year and HMIC finds that is proving to be effective in coordinating national resources for major events and crises.
“There is more to do to develop a clear, consistent approach to meeting the SPR, particularly in cyber crime, which is a growing threat. This report will assist chiefs and the College of Policing in this on-going work and provide useful ideas for enhancement where this can be achieved within the current financial austerity across policing.”
