Chief police officers have given their backing to a national initiative designed to raise awareness of knife crime and encourage the surrender of dangerous weapons. The British Ironwork Centre, who are coordinating the project, intend to use collected knives to create a 20 foot high guardian angel sculpture.
National Policing Lead on Knife Enabled Crime, Chief Constable Alf Hitchcock, attended the launch in Birmingham. He said:
"While projects encouraging the surrender of knives are not a single solution to violence, they have an important role to play in inspiring communities to get behind education and preventative measures.
"Such campaigns show a desire to address local concerns and the Police Service is keen to throw our weight behind them in support.
"Over recent years we have seen reduced levels of violent crime, including knife crime, and together with communities and partners we are focussed on maintaining and developing that downward trend.”
