ACPO responds to Budget 2013

ACPO lead for finance and resources, Assistant Chief Officer Nigel Brook, said:

“It is encouraging to see the Government has today protected the police from additional cuts in 2013/2014. We share the Home Secretary’s view that priority should be given to protecting frontline public services and forces will be eager to learn whether the additional one per cent of cuts to be found in the Home Office budget for 2014/15 will affect policing.

“Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary has previously forecast that Chief Constables across the country will lose 15,000 police officers and 17,400 police staff by 2015. Policing is putting huge effort into making savings but further reductions in police budgets would lead to fewer officers and staff. Every chief officer remains committed to doing all they can to protect frontline service delivery to the public, including those parts of policing which the public see at work in neighbourhoods every day, but also the less visible but equally critical policing work, from counter-terrorism to public protection, which together help keep people safe.”
