The first National Policing Children and Young People Conference in four years has taken place based around the theme ‘children are children first’
Senior force leads and experts from around the UK came together today, Tuesday 25 November, to pool knowledge, discuss good practice and set out priorities for policing younger members of the community going forward.
Keynote speakers included DCC Olivia Pinkney, Baroness Massey of Darwen, Dr Enys Delmage, Anne Campbell and panelist Deputy Children’s Commissioner Sue Berelowitz.
Four issues were addressed by delegates in more depth:
National Policing Lead for Children & Young People and conference organiser Deputy Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney said:
“Never has the spotlight been so bright on the way our younger community is policed. Children are children first and not miniature adults. Every encounter they have with the police leaves a lasting impression, which is why we must make sure our approach is not only professional but also positive and reassuring.
“Across the country a huge amount of brilliant work is taking place to keep young people safe and divert the minority who offend away from crime. Now we must turn that good practice into common practice, learning from one another and driving the agenda forward.
“The police are here to protect the vulnerable and young people are vulnerable due to their age. By getting this right from the start, building trust and inspiring confidence we will reduce future demand and change lives for the better on a daily basis.”
