ACPO comment on the Hutton report

ACPO lead on finance and resources Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell said:

"The Hutton review has highlighted the need to ensure that public sector pensions are fair and affordable. It is also clear about the need to recognise the unique role of the police when reviewing recommendations on pensions.

“Terms and conditions for all police officers are negotiated through the Police Negotiating Board where every rank from across the service is represented. At this early stage, it is difficult to determine what the impact of the changes may be, particularly if coupled with increases to pension contributions and proposed changes to Tom Winsor’s review on police pay and conditions.

"Police officers already make significant contributions towards their pension entitlement, up to 11 per cent of their pay which is one of the highest ratios in the public sector.

"We will await formal proposals through the PNB in due course."
