ACPO lead for workforce development, Chief Constable Peter Fahy comments on the A19 procedure
ACPO lead on workforce development Chief Constable Peter Fahy said:
“Chief constables face hard choices. Every police force starts from a different position but the reality is that significant cash savings must be made over the next four years and the cumulative impact of cutting police budgets year-on-year will translate into reductions of police officers and staff as we seek to preserve the best possible policing service to the public.
“There is a huge amount of experience and expertise within the police service which the public values in our committed workforce. The A19 regulation allows police forces to retire officers with more than 30 years service, on full pension, in the interests of the efficiency and effectiveness of the force. Chief officers recognise that this regulation is a blunt instrument but such is the reality of the cuts faced that no option can be ruled out.
“Final decisions on the use of the compulsory retirement procedure are a matter for individual Police Authorities who will consider how best to manage the cuts in funding they face.”
