ACPO comment on quarterly crime update to December 2010

The latest recorded crime statistics and British Crime Survey results show that police are continuing to drive down crime

ACPO head of crime Chief Constable Jon Murphy said:

“Police are committed to the job of tackling crime and keeping people safe from harm. The latest recorded crime statistics and British Crime Survey results show that we are continuing to drive down crime. Police recorded crime is down six per cent for the 12 months to December 2010, while the official crime survey data shows a three per cent decrease in incidents.

“The official crime statistics are showing that the risk of being a victim of crime remains at a 30-year low, and downward trends continue for most offence categories. Ongoing increases in sex offences, following efforts nationally to improve all areas of sex offence investigation, are also showing signs of slowing. We remain determined to bring to justice people who commit sex crimes and encourage victims to have the confidence to report such crimes.

“These bulletins are the most comprehensive picture of crime in the community and continuing to improve public confidence in our ability to tackle criminality is a challenge that we strive to improve every day.

“We are prepared for challenging times ahead as forces continue the fight against crime with reduced budgets and resource but remain accountable to our mission to keep people safe from harm.”
