ACPO comment on Police Federation survey

ACPO lead for workforce development Chief Constable Peter Fahy said:

“There is no doubt we are facing extremely challenging times in policing. The police service puts over 80% of its resources into its people, and the future is clearly a smaller service. Police officers and staff alike recognise that the cuts ahead are going to be difficult.

“That does not mean that policing is broken. The police service has a can-do ethos and there is a sense of realism about the economic situation we are collectively faced with. Our officers and staff are hugely dedicated, innovative and determinedly focussed on delivering the best service possible to the public we serve.

“The current financial uncertainty is affecting morale in all the public services and policing is no different. Most staff are enormously frustrated by the lack of discretion and common sense they are allowed and want to see a reduction in unnecessary bureaucracy. This is also an important route to achieving cost savings. Whatever the various pressures, the police service is determined that the criminal fraternity will not have an easier time. The duty to the public will come first and it is wrong to suggest otherwise.”
