ACPO comment on local crime information

31 Jan 2011

New street-level data will provide local residents with the ability access information about crime in their area

ACPO lead on crime information Deputy Chief Constable Neil Rhodes said:

“Forces have for some time mapped crimes and incidents to help them focus investigations, analyse hot spots and tackle crime. The latest street-level data will provide local residents the ability to log onto their local force website and access information about crime in their local area.

“This new more community-focussed approach means the public can now look at crime levels simply by putting their street name or postcode into their local police force’s website. Importantly the information will also provide links into local neighbourhood policing teams, which will hopefully build on community involvement in policing.

“ACPO believes that making such information available to members of the public will assist public awareness of how the police service is working to reduce crime and disorder in communities, help reduce the fear of crime and in areas where crime is occurring, provide encouragement to the public to support the police with information and remain watchful when appropriate.

“Through crime mapping, forces will continue to work hard to provide the public with more information to help them understand what is happening in their area and reassure them of what is being done to make them safer.”
