ACPO responds to a plan for a 12-month pilot of domestic violence protection orders in Greater Manchester, West Mercia and Wiltshire
ACPO lead on domestic abuse Deputy Chief Constable Carmel Napier said:
“Domestic abuse is an enormous issue, one in seven of all violent crimes reported are related to domestic abuse. Every year about one in six of all murders in the UK are domestic violence related homicides.
“Last year ACPO was asked to take part in a review of police powers and laws around tackling violence against women and girls, and the implementation of the domestic violence protection order was a key recommendation from that review and mirror police powers already being used elsewhere in Europe.
“We are pleased that the Home Secretary has announced the decision to pilot these new powers in three force areas. The orders will assist police in doing all we can to protect victims of domestic abuse and give victims the necessary breathing space to make informed decisions about their long-term safety and that of their children without the immediate fear of threat or further harm.”
